Certain

Premier League knowledge? Who am I kidding? The matches are invariably closely and keenly contested, and some of the results confound even the most experienced of pundits – so if we know anything for certain, it’s that anything can, and probably will, happen! Week 4 Premier League preview

Arsenal, surprisingly for me at least, failed to blow away Liverpool as I’d fancifully predicted. Bournemouth found out what’s required to win a Premier League match – you need to score four goals away from home then hang on as if you’re life depends upon it – while Leicester and Manchester United both drew but remain unbeaten. Manchester City sail on serenely at the top with everyone grabbing David Silva for their Fantasy teams, and another Spanish star flew in from Barcelona to make an immediate impact for Jose. Sunderland confounded many by sharing the points with Swansea in a week where confounding draws were the norm.

That’s the thing about the Premier League. If you haven’t already, get used to being confounded. On a weekly basis. What’s in store over the next seven days, I wonder …? (more…)

Torfabrik Football

After just two weeks of German football action we’re now beginning to see just what sides will look to impress and may fail to live up to our pre-season expectations.

Can Wolfsburg shake off the transfer market blues?
The Wolves didn’t quite look themselves on Saturday when they travelled to Mainz and were lucky to leave with a point. Kevin De Bruyne’s head may be turned towards England, but the team as a whole looked dejected. They’ll have to be much better if they hope to overcome a new-look Schalke side on Friday night. (more…)

Barcelona v Malaga
Barcelona got off to the perfect start with a narrow 1-0 triumph over Athletic Club last Sunday, even if the champions’ overall performance was not the best. Nonetheless, a trip to the Basque country is never easy – as Barca found out first-hand in the Spanish Super Cup – and this weekend’s clash with Malaga at Camp Nou should be a simpler task.
Neymar could return to Luis Enrique’s front three after illness, though centre-back Gerard Pique continues to be sidelined through suspension and Sergio Busquets and Dani Alves look likely to miss out through injury. (more…)

The opening weekend of Serie A action produced goals, red cards and a huge upset after reigning champions Juventus lost at home to Udinese. But with Juve travelling to title rivals Roma in week two, how will they respond?

Can Roma add to Juventus’s opening day woes?
Before their 1-0 defeat to Udinese, Juventus had never lost at home on the opening day of a Serie A season. While they were missing Claudio Marchisio, Sami Khedira and Alvaro Morata through injury, the result still sent shockwaves across the peninsula. More worryingly for Juve, they looked devoid of leadership and creativity. (more…)

Serie A Season Preview

The 2015/16 Serie A season kicks-off on Sunday, August 23rd and after Juventus’s Champions League final appearance last season, as well as a busy transfer window for Italian clubs, Calcio appears to be undergoing a revival.

Doubt Juventus at your peril
When Juventus clinched their fourth consecutive title last season, second placed Roma finished some 17 points behind.
The Giallorossi struggled for goals last term, and their overall tally of 54 was the lowest in the top six. Coach Rudi Garcia has addressed this, recruiting Edin Dzeko and winger Mohamed Salah. Further arrivals are expected before the market closes and having retained midfielders Miralem Pjanic and Radja Nainggolan, Roma are equipped to mount a serious title challenge. (more…)

If results were at least a little easier to predict, week 2 in the world’s most fascinating league still provided plenty of trademark intrigue – notably a decidedly uncomfortable ride for Jose at the Etihad.

Manchester City duly put Chelsea away but with an unexpected degree of comfort, and the other 100% sides disputing matters at the top are Manchester United, without hitting any lofty heights in terms of form; Leicester City, who look utterly transformed under former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri; and Liverpool, who sneaked by Bournemouth courtesy of a shocking offside omission by a generous assistant referee. Upon such narrow margins do matches, occasionally careers, and even titles fall …. (more…)

Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona
Treble winners last time out, Barca face a tricky start to the 2015-16 campaign with a trip to the Basque country. Athletic will be looking to build on last season’s seventh-place finish, and may even consider themselves dark horses for a Champions League spot.
Barcelona won this fixture 5-2 last term, but were defeated at San Mames the previous year; while the Catalans should have enough to win this one, it will likely be a tight encounter, particularly as the excellent Neymar misses out through illness.
If Luis Enrique’s side can pick up three points on Sunday, they will be delighted to have gotten one of the season’s hardest away trips out of the way early on. (more…)
